Ambition of English Department Student to be a Teacher
Abstract
This
research is accomplished to observe students of English Department of UIN
Ar-Raniry about their ambition whether are consistent as department’s aims in
creating a teacher candidate or not. A student’s survey on their ambition to be
a teacher in studying at English Department was conducted. And the survey shows
that student’s ambition are mostly suitable with vision and mission of English
Department in creating a teacher candidate. But, there are still some students
of English Department that have other ambition than be a candidate of future
teacher. So, it is an important issue for English Department to be stricter in
selection.
Introduction
Recently,
an issue raised in students of English Department area that every student that
takes the major really have an ambition to be a teacher in the future or not.
There are many conversation that can be heard among them that much of they
don’t have any ambition to be a teacher. They present various reason about
their other ambition in the future even they are studying at English major.
Like a student said that he just want to learn English language in the major
without have any ambition to be a teacher. It is really an issue for English
Department that have student without aims to be a teacher. According to M.
Gorky Sembiring (2008), a teacher is a professional educator. So, how students
can be a professional teacher if they don’t have motivation to be a teacher.
Actually,
this issue is never heard before. But recently, amount of English department
students raised drastically. They come from many perspective that give effect
in creating their own aims. And the problem that not all of them have the same
motivation to be a teacher is raised.
Methods
This
research was accomplished by questionnaire and implemented student at seventh
semester to their aims in studying at English Department. But, this research
was just implemented on seventeen students used Lekert Scales to observe
percentage of ambition to be a future teacher. Survey collection was
accomplished in class after studying and they just have about 10 or 15 minutes
to complete the questionnaire form. No personal information was collected and
the survey also give chance to participant to give their reason.
Results
There
was 17 participant on this research. Eleven of them said that be a teacher is
really their passion and their dream. The table of the responses is listed
below in Table 1.

The
survey gave a chance to participant to give their reason based on their answer.
There many various reason that given by them. Such as one of participant said,
“No, I don’t want to be a teacher because I think being a teacher is not my
passion”. And then, there was also participant make a profession of teacher
as second priority. But, mostly of they have a big ambition to be a teacher in
the future.
Discussion
From
the results, it can be seen that students study at English Department don’t
have the same ambition to be a teacher in the future. There are still some of
them that want to be other profession than be a teacher.
These
results can be a reference for official of English department or official of
UIN Ar-Raniry in doing a selection to be stricter.
Conclusion
Students
that study at English Department or at other Education Department don’t have a
same ambition to be a teacher in the future. Much of them have a big ambition
to be a teacher, but there are still some of them that make the profession as
second option, and some of them don’t want to be a teacher, even.
Recommendations
It
is recommended that Official of UIN Ar-Raniry, especially Official of English
Department,
1. UIN
Ar-Raniry Official should be stricter in doing the selection of students.
2. English
Department should increase the criteria of student candidate
